A well to stop thirst: let's help the people of Turkana

The Turkana region of Kenya is facing one of the worst droughts in 40 years. People are forced to dig shallow holes in lake beds to search for water, but it is dirty and undrinkable, causing serious health problems, especially among children. The solution is the construction of wells that can provide potable water. The total cost of the work is €126,990. Everyone's support is needed to achieve this goal. Your help now is indispensable.

The solution is the construction of wells that can provide potable water. The total cost of the work is €126,990. Everyone's support is needed to achieve this goal. Your help now is indispensable.

In Turkana, one of the world's driest and poorest lands located north of Kenya, there has been no rain for almost three years. Not a single drop of water. It is the worst drought in 40 years, according to the United Nations, and between 4 and 5 million people are at high food risk.

The only chance the Turkana people have not to die of thirst is to drink the water they find by digging shallow holes in dry riverbeds. But drinking dirty, undrinkable water on a daily basis creates serious health problems, especially in children.

We want to build real wells, which will give the Turkana people easy access to potable water. After some surveys, two areas have been identified for drilling near the villages of Moite and Altugo.

This is the estimated cost of constructing a single well:
  • Equipment (pump, solar structures, cables, pipes, water meter, connectors): 12,178 euros
  • Water tank: 16,660 euros
  • 2 cattle troughs: 5,833 euros
  • Water kiosk: 5,833 euros
  • Fence: 4,041 euros
To all this must be added the cost of drilling: 20,300 euros for Moite and 17,600 euros for Altugo.

Thanks to the project about 3,000 people will finally have access todrinking water, and another 500 residents in nearby villages will have access to the facilities. Invaluable and necessary help for women, the elderly, and children forced to travel several kilometers to be able to get dirty water from shallow holes.

It is a matter of time: the sooner we are able to build these wells, the sooner we will allow the Turkana people to have access to clean water so they no longer get sick.

Here the poor are paying the consequences of climate change for which they are not responsible. Here the cry of the poor and the cry of the earth is louder than ever. A cry that cannot leave us indifferent. Water is man's most precious commodity, water means life but for the people who live in those arid soils, water is a mirage. Your help can make it real.
