I try to live alone: a project to support young people with disabilities
"I try to live on my own" is a project that, thanks to the collaboration between GRD Faenza and the Pope John XXIII Community, offers young people with disabilities the opportunity to learn to live on their own. Now they need your help to raise the €15,000 needed for the maintenance of one of the homes made available to the young people, which has seriously deteriorated over time.
"I try to live on my own" is a beautiful project born in Faenza in 2021 from the collaboration between the GRD Faenza Association and the Papa Giovanni XXIII Community that involves teaching young people with disabilities to live independently on their own, within housing made available to the Associations themselves.
The boys, supported by educators and young volunteers from the Community, learn how to manage daily life, relate to others, and take care of themselves and the common spaces. Every day they are immersed in a path of growth that makes them feel valued and gives them the opportunity to realize themselves as individuals.
The acquisition of autonomy represents a fundamental achievement not only for the children, but also for their families. For parents, who are often grappling with daily challenges and concerns about managing their children, seeing them grow up, become more independent and protagonists of their own lives allows them to look to the future with greater serenity, especially when they can no longer care for them.
The current condition of one of the homes provided is making the boys' daily lives more difficult than necessary.
French doors, which do not close properly, cause uncomfortable drafts that make the rooms unwelcoming, especially during the colder seasons; the absence of an air conditioner makes the common spaces almost unlivable in the warmer months, compromising well-being and concentration; the impractical bathtubs, for the boys' mobility, should be replaced with a shower. Finally, the kitchen has deteriorated over the years, and the washing machine is no longer functional; therefore, a renovation of the entire room is urgently needed.
15,000€ is needed to accomplish all these works. All together we can help them achieve this important goal and allow the project to continue to offer children with disabilities a safe and welcoming environment, where they have the opportunity not only to take an important step toward independence, but also to learn how to deal with and solve everyday problems.
Carrying out such a project means giving these boys the dignity as citizens that they often demand of us, giving them the independence but above all the self-determination they have the right to discover.
For each of them to have their own house keys and to have their own tasks means being able to find a place and a role in society. Their homes, therefore, need urgent interventions that will enable them to pursue their dream.
