An operation for Lucija

Ivana and Roberto, members of the Pope John XXIII Community, are the mother and father of little Lucija affected since birth by a malformation that caused her lower limbs to become dysmetria. Today Lucija has the opportunity to undergo leg lengthening surgery, which has a cost of €60,000. Your help is crucial to enable her to undergo the surgery and start living the life she has always dreamed of.

A life shared with those in need
Lucija is 12 years old and since she was born she has shared her life with children and young people who had no family, growing up naturally among many acquired siblings. Her parents, Ivana and Roberto, are members of the Pope John XXIII Community and have chosen to dedicate their lives to welcoming into their Family Home anyone who needs a mom and dad, for a while or forever.

Facing difficulties with a smile
Lucija has suffered since birth from a rare limb malformation that caused the femur and tibia of her right leg to grow smaller than that of her left leg, along with a missing cruciate ligament in her right knee.

From an early age, she compensated by walking on her toes and was able to attend artistic gymnastics, swimming, modern dance, and scouting. Today, however, the dysmetria between her legs has exceeded 8 cm, and to walk Lucija must wear an orthopedic shoe with a rather heavy elevation.

This situation pains her, because-in addition to the increasing pain she feels in her hip, foot, and back when she makes efforts- Lucija feels that she is "not like others."

A surgery that can change her life
Today Lucija has the opportunity to undergo a leg-lengthening surgery that may allow her to lead the life she dreams of, just like all her peers. If she did not have such surgery she would face serious joint and back problems in the future.

It is a very challenging surgery, but there is an opportunity to use an experimental methodology that is less invasive and, above all, much less painful than the traditional one. This surgery involves an expense of 60,000€ and, since it is not covered by the National Health Service, it is completely paid for by her parents.

Together we can all help Lucija live a normal life and fulfill her dreams, including becoming a writer. Who knows, one day she may tell the story of a little girl who, climbing a mountain on her own legs, discovered that she was not alone by meeting Jesus, in the affection and support of so many friends who accompanied her to the top, just as she welcomed so many brothers and sisters into her family in simplicity and gratuitousness.

You can support this project in two ways:
  • Donate to an already active personal fundraiser: any contribution, even the smallest, will make a difference.
  • If, on the other hand, you want to do something even bigger, activate a personal fundraiser and help us involve many new people we otherwise could not reach by asking your friends, family and colleagues to support you with a donation.
