A bus to be a voice for the last

In Cameroon, the Pope John XXIII Community through its project "Never again minors in prison" prevents the incarceration of minors and promotes the reintegration of prisoners through training and social reintegration paths. Volunteers work in prisons, courts, and assist families of inmates and children living on the streets. To carry out these activities in a difficult environment, with bad roads and ineffective transportation, a suitable vehicle is needed. The cost is high: 30,000€. Let's help them achieve the goal!

The Pope John XXIII Community has been present in Cameroon with the "Never again minors in prison" project since 2014, with the aim of preventing the incarceration of children and young people and lowering the recidivism rate of inmates, following them in paths of re-education and socio-professional reintegration.

This path is done thanks to the presence of many volunteers who, under the supervision of the project manager, stand by these people in an all-round way:
  • In five prisons located in the region, through moments of meeting and confrontation they lay the foundations for a new life path;
  • They garrison the Palaces of Justice where their presence is essential to try to achieve alternative sentences to prison and ensure respect for basic human rights;
  • They meet the families of prisoners and undertake with them a path of mediation and reconciliation, which is fundamental at the moment of release;
  • They carry out preventive actions, thanks to meeting and supporting children and young people living on the street to whom they guarantee basic necessities and with whom they try to establish a relationship of trust: the goal is to give them the opportunity to start a path in the Community houses where they will have the opportunity to eat, sleep, study and learn a trade.
All these activities require timeliness and a large amount of travel, but to do them it is essential to have adequate transportation: in Cameroon the roads are bumpy and rarely paved, and when it rains they become veritable rivers of mud. Public transportation is unreliable and inefficient, and performing even the simplest daily tasks becomes time and energy consuming. In addition, in more remote rural settings it becomes almost impossible to reach families with whom a relationship of trust and cooperation needs to be established instead.

Having a safe vehicle is essential to continue to be a voice for these people. Unfortunately, the cost for a minibus is very high and despite the help received from many people, we are still 30,000€ short to be able to buy a new vehicle.

Help us now with a donation. Or multiply your contribution by creating your own fundraiser to share with your friends and relatives. The network expands and together we reach the goal! Help our volunteers have a suitable vehicle to take care of the most vulnerable people. Come on, are you in?
