Helping to ensure a better future for children and young people
In the center of Puerto Madryn, in the deep south of Argentine Patagonia, Maurizio, the Manager, together with other volunteers organize an after-school program for children from poor families who are often victims of violence.
Here the state education system is practically nonexistent and many children reach the age of 12 completely illiterate; at the center, however, they have the opportunity to study, to learn to read, write and count; they also have the chance to share moments of leisure and to benefit from a daily meal, which is indispensable for those who come from families that do not even have food to put on the table.
A new car to reach families and children in the poorest neighborhoods
At the end of the year, Mauritius will be joined by two families from the Pope John XXIII Community who have chosen to live out their vocation in these lands, alongside children and the most fragile. His spouses Mario and Carla, John and Angelica, will support him in the activities and projects organized for disadvantaged children and youth: a summer camp within the center with 40 children aged 6 to 12, an after-school program organized in another barrio in Puerto Madryn with 32 children, and an educational project for drug and violence prevention for children and adolescents aged 4 to 17, in collaboration with the diocese in the city of Trelew.
In order to get around, Mauritius and the volunteers accompanying him, also in anticipation of new arrivals and activities, need an additional vehicle, a new car, safe and reliable, since the roads, in Patagonia, are unpaved and in very poor condition, almost unusable on rainy days.
They currently have only an old van which, fortunately, thanks to the help of many supporters, they have managed to repair but it is not enough. Travel by public transportation is difficult and time-consuming. That is why it is essential to help them in the purchase of a new vehicle, the cost of which is 30,000€, which is not only essential for daily travel, but also essential to reach the children far from the places where the activities are held and to visit families in need.
