Operation Dove in Palestine - 2023
Volunteers from Operation Dove, a nonviolent peace corps of the Pope John XXIII Community, have been present in the Palestinian village of At-Tuwani since 2004. Their presence is necessary because they protect children on their way to school and safeguard the safety of Palestinian residents in the area, as well as denounce the Human Rights violations that too often occur there. Operation Dove volunteers have been in Palestine since 2002, first in the Gaza Strip, in Al Qarara (Khan Younis), then since 2004 in the West Bank, in the village of At-Tuwani (hills south of Hebron).
However, the connection with people known in Gaza has never been severed. Periodically, a delegation from Operation Dove visits the Strip to monitor the situation and keep relations alive.
In At-Tuwani, in Area C (under Israeli civilian and military control), the lives of Palestinians are confronted with continuous injustices: demolitions, unjustified arrests, military raids and attacks by settlers and soldiers mark the daily lives of families in the area and throughout Palestine.
Thevolunteers' presence is very important: they monitor daily the Israeli military escort that accompanies Palestinian children from the villages of Tuba and Maghayir al Abeed to the school in At-Tuwani; they accompany farmers and shepherds on their own land abutting settlements and outposts; and they monitor and denounce the constant checkpoints, arrests, military training, and demolitions that take place in the area. Denunciations of Human Rights violations are made possible through continuous documentation (photos and videos).
In recent years, the creation of groups of young Palestinian activists involved in the same monitoring, denunciation and accompaniment activities (also together with Israeli activists) has enabled Operation Dove volunteers to take their support and nonviolent action to other areas of Palestine as well.
On May 4, 2022, the Israeli Supreme Court sanctioned, after more than 20 years of litigation, the expulsion of the population of eight Palestinian villages in the Masafer Yatta area (also hills south of Hebron) within the so-called "Firing Zone 918." Therefore, at any time the Israeli army can execute the ruling and demolish these villages, leaving more than 1,200 people homeless.
This is also why the presence of Operation Dove volunteers is increasingly important: to protect the safety of the Palestinian inhabitants of the area, who just want to live on their own land.
