Helping the Heart of St. Joseph Family Home with their new home

The Family House "Heart of St. Joseph" of the Pope John XXIII Community has recently moved to a new house, but it needs urgent work to adapt it to the needs of the people with disabilities who live there; the cost is €10,000. Let's help mom Paola and dad Alberto find the necessary resources to start these works, which are essential for the daily life and psychophysical well-being of the children with disabilities they have taken in.

Papa Alberto and Mama Paola's "Heart of St. Joseph" Family Home consists of Lauretta, Mama's eldest daughter and right-hand man; Grandma Maria Grazia, who is no longer self-sufficient; and then 27-year-old Alessio, taken in when he was only 11, and A.F., the "flea" of the house, both severely autistic .

The Home was born 16 years ago just as we welcomed Alessio: "He was the one who found us," Paola says, "and the first thing he told us was that he would like 25 siblings, a dog, a cat and a grandmother." In the Family Home many of these things have become a reality in his life.

Alessio needs constant accompaniment in order to be able to live a daily life similar to that of his peers, and in recent years he has acquired a lot of autonomy, managing to graduate from high school and get a degree, and this is also thanks to a network of people, Associations and Institutions that has been created around him and the Family Home in Finale Ligure, where they have lived until now.

Some time ago, however, the Family Home was forced to look for a new home and they are now in the process of moving to Albenga, about 30km away from their current home. For people like Alessio and little A.F. - who does not speak and has severe eating, sleeping and bowel problems - it takes time to adapt to the changes, so it is most important to adjust the new home to their needs, to maintain as many points of reference as possible.

Above all, it is important that there is also a room in the new house, a space properly equipped so that it becomes a "decompression valve" for Alessio and A.F., which they need for their disability. The new house is smaller and has a terrace that needs to be equipped so that it can become "their" dedicated space. The first intervention is to make it safe and functional by installing a fence. It will then need a veranda, which will shelter from the sun, a "soft corner" where A.F. can relax and relieve stress, because disabilities like his place place a heavy burden on his muscles, and a space where Alessio can give vent to the "passion" for 2 wheels that he has had since childhood.

There is an urgent need to find the resources to start these works, which are essential for the daily life and psychophysical well-being of these boys. The cost of the work is about 10,000 €, an expense that the Pope John XXIII Community cannot sustain at this time. That is why your help is important!
