A Peace (im)possible in Colombia
Fundraising by Stefano Morosinato
As some of you may already know, I am currently in Colombia with Operation Dove - Nonviolent Peace Corps of the Pope John XXIII Community - to continue accompanying those in need, something I have been trying to do for the last 4 years with my work in Italy. I am here because in the northwest of this wonderful and complex country there is a Peace Community of San José de Apartadó that, despite the situation of extreme violence due to an internal conflict that has lasted for more than half a century, manages to resist through the practice of nonviolence.
I think that in a global landscape where violence is ever increasing and intense,
this is an incredible feat to say the least. The way of life perpetuated by the Comunidad is unique and, in addition to nonviolence, is based on a direct relationship with the Earth, communal living
and the rejection of any compromise with those involved in the conflict.
And it is precisely offering such an extraordinary alternative that makes it subject to the threats
of armed groups for control of a geo-strategic territory that is extremely rich in
mineral and natural resources. I feel extremely fortunate to be able to accompany, through my presence as an Operation Dove volunteer, the Peace Community and these people who I feel are in the right because of how they perpetuate their peaceful resistance and defend their land.
It is not easy, yet they continue to exist, and they can continue to do so through fundraisers like this one. Thank you from the very beginning for your support.
