Operation Dove in Palestine - 2022
The volunteers of Operazione Colomba, the nonviolent peace corps of the Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII, have been present in the Palestinian village of At-Tuwani since 2004. Their presence is necessary because every day they monitor the Israeli military escort that accompanies Palestinian children on a 3km walk to school, as well as denouncing the violations of Human Rights that all too often occur in those places. Support our volunteers to ensure the children and families of that place safety and security.
Since 2004, volunteers from Operation Dove have lived in the Palestinian village of At-Tuwani, in the Hills south of Hebron.
In Area C, under Israeli civilian and military control, the lives of Palestinians face constant injustice: demolitions, unjustified arrests, military raids and attacks by settlers and soldiers mark the daily lives of families in the area and throughout Palestine.
The volunteers' presence is necessary: they monitor daily the Israeli military escort that accompanies Palestinian children from Tuba and Maghayir al Abeed villages to the school in At-Tuwani; they accompany farmers and shepherds on their own land abutting settlements and outposts; and they monitor and denounce the constant checkpoints, arrests, military training, and demolitions that occur in the area. Reports of Human Rights violations are made possible through continuous documentation (photos and videos). Living inside the village, volunteers share with the families the risks, hardships but also the happy moments of each day, involving themselves in their daily lives.
In recent years, the presence of new groups of young Palestinian activists has enabled Operation Dove volunteers to lighten their presence in the Hills South of Hebron to bring their support to other areas as well, particularly north of Jericho in the Jordan Valley. Here too, getting into the daily routine of families' lives, volunteers have begun accompanying shepherds in the area.
Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, volunteers have continued, even through alternative methods, to share daily life with Palestinians. Violations, due to the decreased presence of international volunteers, have increased, both by settlers and soldiers. Hoping for a strong and stable presence stems from the words of Palestinians, who at every opportunity greet volunteers with a warm "Ahlan wa sahlan," welcome, or rather, welcome home. That is why your help is important, to continue to provide these families with safety and security.
