A birthday for dignity in refugee camps
Fundraising by Maddalena Fabbi
I turned 26 at the border of Fortress Europe.
I have been living in Athens for more than three months now, volunteering in the "Border Emergency" project of Operation Dove, Nonviolent Peace Corps of the Pope John XXIII Community. As a Dove, I have chosen to live this year in a seemingly non-conflict zone to be close to those seeking a better life and/or fleeing violence, persecution and war in their home countries .
"A refugee camp is a space designated for undesirables expelled from society. It is bothan exile and a border."
From Shahram Khosravi's book "I am Border"
The people I meet on a daily basis live in refugee camps far from cities, amid industrial warehouses and landfills, and with little, if any, access to urban services, including hospitals, legal services and job opportunities.
Each week I travel, along with other Operation Dove volunteers, outside the camps to provide people with moments of levity, venting, community, and the information they need to exercise their Rights.
Often, to combat the politics of invisibilization, marginalization and ghettoization, it is important to be there and to be there. This is only possible because of your support, both financial and emotional.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support!
