To change the world you have to be there

I amCarlotta, a volunteer of Operazione Colomba for the Pope John XIII Community project in Lesbos , and I have been here for just over a month. On the island, not far from the sea, there is the Mavrovouni camp, a closed camp, which contains more than 2,000 refugees, who have fled from war-torn countries, from their lands, because they are victims of injustice and oppression. In the camp they are forced to live in inhuman conditions. What is our task?A difficult question to answer because the answers can be many, but only if you really want to listen. We are here to help them in their daily needs and to make their stay on this island lighter, through a laugh or a word of comfort. We are here to hug them tight and let them know they are not alone. We are here to look them in the eyes and transmit all our closeness, to share their pain and make it our own.To make them understand that even if the rest of the world is closing the door in their face, ours will always be open.We need that through a small contribution you help us to stay.Thank you infinitely,Carlotta

What is our task?

A difficult question to answer because the answers can be many, but only if you really want to listen.

We are here to help them in their daily needs and to make their stay on this island lighter, through a laugh or a word of comfort.

We are here to hug them tight and let them know they are not alone.

We are here to look them in the eyes and transmit all our closeness, to share their pain and make it our own.

To make them understand that even if the rest of the world is closing the door in their face, ours will always be open.

We need that through a small contribution you help us to stay.

Thank you infinitely,

Carlotta

The fundraiser supports the project: I have a brother in Lesbos waiting for me.
Total project goal: 58.900 €

Thousands of men, women and children who have fled war and misery arrive at the Lesbos refugee camp in Greece with the hope of a new beginning, but here they discover only more suffering. The Pope John XXIII Community has chosen to be in Lesbos to share the drama of this humanity, to give a voice to these unheard people. The presence of the Community's volunteers and of Operazione Colomba (the Community's non-violent peace corps) and the reception in the family house in Athens is indispensable: help us to be present alongside the men, women and children who are suffering in desperate silence. They need us now.
