The roots of resistance
Fundraising by Mattia Marzorati
In 2021, 145 social leaders and environmental defenders were assassinated in Colombia, a sad world record that is being reaffirmed again this year. Despite more than 300 deaths, the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó, in the north of the country, has resisted continuous massacres and threats for 25 years in an attempt to create a life-respecting reality opposed to capitalism and war. To be part of this community means repudiating all forms of hatred by taking the risk of seeing one's name appear among those of the many people killed. Sowing and harvesting have become daily gestures of resistance that ward off the violence of land dispossession, logging, and uncontrolled extractivism. Volunteers from Operation Dove, as an international civilian escort, live alongside these people and share a journey made not only of blood but also of joy and hope. During the past three months, I have been part of the project and have been fortunate to get to know and accompany the community. Join the fundraiser to defend the lives of those who also fight for us.
