A car for the "Fraternity" Family House

A car is essential for life at the Family House of the Pope John XXIII Community, where Damiana, the mother, takes care of Camil and Nello, children with disabilities. Their needs are many and in order to meet them, they need a vehicle that allows them to move freely and safely.

I am Damiana, mother of the Family House "Fraternity" of the Pope John XXIII Community. I live in Legnago (VR) together with Camil and Nello whom I welcomed more than twenty years ago. They became part of my life when they were still very young; Camil has Down's syndrome while Nello has medium to severe mental retardation. They were supposed to be temporary homes but, day after day, our bond became stronger, more special. The need to be a family for those who don't have one has made our house always ready to welcome those in need: in all these years many people have passed under our roof, often young drug addicts, who here found the strength to start again, also thanks to the contagious will to live of Nello and Camil who, despite their disability, manage to grasp the joys that life offers us. We often went to visit together the young people who were following a rehabilitation programme in the Therapeutic Communities of the Pope John XXIII Community. They were enriching encounters for everyone... this need to share life, suffering and hardships, over time, matured in me: for this reason, for the past two years, I have been returning to those places but as an operator. It's a bit like being a double mother, with my children and with the other children who need people who know how to listen to them and accompany them towards a new life. The daily activities as a mother take up most of my time and there are many kilometres to cover: Nello and Camil are included in the Social Cooperatives of the area and here they find their dignity through work, they feel useful and appreciated. They have many interests among which the Scouts, the group of friends of our Parish and cannot miss sport. They love basketball, especially Nello! Whenever I have to accompany him to practices and games, I go far and wide. But his smile repays me for every effort! The car we have now needs to be replaced but we can't stay without it, it's indispensable for the whole family. We all have many activities and commitments, that's why we need a vehicle that allows us to travel freely and safely and that allows Nello and Camil to express their potential and their need to live and share!
