Pope John XXIII Community alongside Christians in Iraq
The Pope John XXIII Community, which has already been working in Iraq for ten years with activities to support people with disabilities, will intensify its presence beginning in 2026 to ensure support for the people of Qaraqosh, in and around the Sheqaq area, in close collaboration with the local church.
Qaraqosh is a symbolic village of the Christian presence in Iraq that, following the Isis occupation, has seen half of its population forced to emigrate. The absence of government subsidies to repair homes has forced those who have returned to live in extreme poverty, mainly affecting the most vulnerable-such as widows, the disabled, the sick-because of the lack of social and health services.
Together with the local bishop, the Pope John XXIII Community aims to establish a friendly presence that will help restore the confidence of these people, activating pathways and actions necessary to respond to the concrete needs of this population.
Thanks to the presence of the Community's missionaries, also involving local volunteers and people already working in the area, we want to carry out various activities aimed at ensuring that these people have the possibility of building a dignified and peaceful life for themselves. To do this, we will need €20,000, which will be used to:
- build the kindergarten in the compound run by the local church, which is necessary to take children off the streets;
- fund microcredit activities to provide some families with economic independence;
- support volunteers' expenses (food, board, lodging, local travel);
- purchase the materials needed to carry out activities and aggregative moments with local people.
We really need your help to be able to accomplish all this: support us with a donation and help us ensure our presence and support the journey of this people towards rebirth. Every donation, even the smallest, will allow us to ensure that we can start this journey of aid, giving hope and opportunities for the future to the poorest families in Sheqaq.
We will stand by them following the teaching of our founder Don Oreste Benzi, "Every poor person who knocks on the door should be welcomed.Before you solve his problem, he asks you to participate in his life, take charge and put his shoulder under his cross and carry it together."
Stay by our side too, thank you!
