Choosing to choose oneself

Hi! I'm Caterina and, after graduating from college, I had the desire to stop and give myself a chance to "put my hands to work," listen and inhabit a piece of the world. Since January I have been in Greece as a volunteer with Operation Dove, the Nonviolent Peace Corps of the Pope John XXIII Community. The people I meet have all fled violence and suffering, moved in part by the hope of finding a place in Europe where they can feel protected. What they have found, however, is still fear and suffering: their home is a tent or a container, they live without light and heat in a condition that does not even allow them to hope. This is not the Europe they dreamed of, this is not the Europe I studied in books. I choose to stay here, to face this reality and I choose to share this time with them. It is difficult to keep our eyes open and listen to their stories. We find some strength in doing it together and choosing each other. If you want we can do it together, even with you. If you want I will take you with me. Thank you for your help--every donation is important to continue supporting the work of all of us volunteers!

The fundraiser supports the project: In Greece to walk alongside migrant people
Total project goal: 20.000 €

Greece is the European Union's first port of call for those fleeing war and persecution. Those who arrive here often find themselves alone, forced to live on the streets. Volunteers from the Pope John XXIII Community, together with Operation Dove, visit people living in and outside refugee camps to offer them support and services, and monitor and report on the human rights violations they suffer. Their presence is crucial: support them on this journey of peace.
