Συνύπαρξη - Synýparxi
It struck me very much that in such a tragic year, where violence is now cleared at every level and where it seems that the only solution adopted by "whoever is in charge" is rearmament, the beginning of Lent and the beginning of Ramadan matched.
I felt like something powerful as I imagined thousands of believers united in a time of prayer, and I could only hope that the uniting element was a strong desire for peace and justice.
Ramadan, for those who have been and are passing through the project in Greece, is a special month, as it allows these faithful far from home, to come together for the moment of Iftar, when after reciting a prayer (which one understands even though one does not understand the language), the fast is broken together, with small bites savored.
Bread is broken and shared, like Jesus at the Last Supper.
There are many elements that make us feel that, in spite of those who scream terror for "the different," we are really sisters and brothers of one humanity.
When we started the project 6 years ago on Lesvos Island, we attended a place called Synýparxi, which means coexistence in Greek.
I always found this word to be very evocative: we exist, but together. Also because, as the philosophy of Ubuntu teaches, it can only be so: we exist only together, only a big we allows me to exist also as me.
In Greece we can continue to be a big we also with your and your help, to be also you, part of this Synýparxi.
Thank you.
